Baptism

Baptism of Infants

The decision to seek baptism for your child is a joyful one for you and for the parish family to which you belong. We look forward to welcoming your new child as a member of our parish faith community.

Parent’s Responsibilities:

Parents need to have a faith in Jesus Christ; to be doing their best to live out this faith; and a desire to share their faith with the child whom they are asking the church to baptise.

Baptism Place and Times

For the Lefevre Catholic Community, Baptisms are usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sundays of the month or on Sundays of long weekends. The usual times are:

In Our Lady of the Visitation Church, Taperoo, after 9:00am Mass

In Sacred Heart Church, Semaphore, after 11:00am Mass

Baptisms can also be celebrated during Sunday Masses by arrangement.

Choosing Godparents

There must be at least one person who has been Baptised and Confirmed in the Catholic Church as godparent for your child. This person will represent the Church into which your child is being baptised, and “lives a life of faith which befits the role to be undertaken” [Code of Canon Law para 874]. Godparents must be not less than fifteen years of age. There can be a second godparent. And a person who has been baptised in any other Christian church can be an official Christian Witness to the baptism. Godparents are bound to support their godchildren by word and example, in faith and Christian living.

Photographs and Video:

Photographs and video may be taken discreetly during the Baptism. If the Baptism is during Mass, there must be special care not to interfere with the liturgy. Please check with the priest beforehand.

Preparing for Baptism

Please contact the parish office and register your details with the Parish Secretary. Fr Roderick will then contact you to meet you and your child, and discuss faith and the processes.

Fees

There is no set fee for baptism. There is a suggested donation of $100, but this is up to each family.

Baptism of Children

Children who are no longer infants, and are now of catechetical age, can be prepared for baptism as part of our Family Faith Formation Programme. Please see details of our programme here.

Baptism of Adults

Our parish offers a programme The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults for adults who wish to be Baptised into the Catholic faith. The programme is offered each year, as needed, and is directed towards Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil Mass each year.

The programme includes liturgies (rituals), instruction, and discussion. Please contact the parish priest or click here for more details.

The Programme may be helpful for adults who are already baptised in another Christian Church, but who now wish to become Catholics.

Further information about the programme is available from the Archdiocese of Adelaide
